Visitors to Pearl Jensen beach may have noticed a new branch of public service. Finn, a mature yellow lab and full-time beach regular, decided over the holidays that something was missing from his favorite stretch of sand — namely, sticks.

So, drawing on his well-hidden opposable thumb (and an impressive sense of civic duty), Finn installed a free Stick Library for fellow canines. Located just off the main path near the south end of the beach, the pup-run facility is fully stocked with tennis balls, ball chuckers, sticks in a wide range of chew-resistant sizes, complimentary poop bags and even a lost-and-found shelf for wayward toys.

A garbage can sits nearby, because Finn believes in clean beaches and responsible retrieving.

The sign on top reads: “Finn’s Stick Library: Take a stick, leave a stick,” a policy experts agree is refreshingly simple. Finn hopes the library will keep the beach tidier for humans while ensuring no dog ever suffers the indignity of a stick shortage. Word on the street is that the library is being well used by visitors.

Finn is best known for being a very good boy.
