The Conway Emergency Operations Center (CEOC) reported it was able to assess the Fir Island diking system and roadway conditions earlier than expected after the Skagit River crested sooner and lower than forecast. The river reached a “moderate” flood stage Wednesday evening with no significant impacts, according to the report.
With the river now below flood stage and no new significant events predicted, the CEOC will deactivate as Fir Island reopens. The Washington National Guard, which supported CEOC operations, will be reassigned.
Residents may continue to see sand, rock and heavy truck traffic in coming days as dike districts conduct proactive reinforcement and maintenance. Some side roads may remain restricted due to heavy equipment, gravel and reduced lanes; posted signage will indicate closures or limitations, and officials asked drivers to follow restrictions for safety.
