One person is dead and five others are injured following a shooting late Saturday night at Sedro-Woolley’s Memorial Park, according to police. Officers responded to the park around 11:19 p.m. after multiple 911 calls reported several people had been shot. Police and fire personnel attempted life-saving measures at the scene before transporting the injured to local hospitals. One suspect is in custody and has been booked into Skagit County Jail. Police said there is no ongoing threat to the public. Two firearms were recovered, and officers remain at the scene processing evidence. ​​U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents reportedly detained a man in Friday Harbor last Tuesday morning, according to the San Juan County Sheriff’s Office. Witnesses saw masked individuals in vests labeled “I.C.E.” escort the man into an SUV. The sheriff’s office confirmed at least two eyewitness accounts and said ICE acknowledged an “encounter” occurred in Friday Harbor but provided no further details. The man’s identity has not been released. A child present during the incident was safely returned to their mother. ICE officials told police that the man is not in ICE Tacoma custody, according to a statement from law enforcement.

Voters in Skagit Port District 2, which includes La Conner, will have the opportunity to hear directly from candidates running for Commissioner Position 2 during a public forum on July 17, hosted by the League of Women Voters of Skagit County. The event will be held at the Mount Vernon Police Multipurpose Room, 1805 Continental Pl., Mount Vernon. Doors open at 5:45 p.m., with the Port District 2 forum scheduled from 6 to 6:45 p.m., followed by a second forum for Mount Vernon City Council, At-Large from 7 to 7:45 p.m. Skagit Port District 2 encompasses areas east of La Conner and Whitney, south of Highway 20 to Highway 9, and extends south of the Skagit River to Loretta Creek, including the Lake Cavanaugh area and precincts in Burlington, North and South La Conner, and Dodge Valley.

The 121st annual Pioneer Picnic will include a special dedication honoring the late Bud Moore, former La Conner mayor and longtime Skagit County Pioneer Association officer. During the August 7 event at Pioneer Park, the bandstand will be officially named in Moore’s memory, following a unanimous Town Council resolution passed June 24 recognizing his decades of civic service. Moore, who passed away May 12 at age 93, was a U.S. Air Force pilot, national collegiate rowing champion, business owner, and two-time mayor. The Skagit County Pioneer Association also unanimously supported the tribute. The picnic, a fundraiser for the Skagit County Historical Museum, begins at 11 a.m. and will also honor the McMoran and Wolden families as Pioneer Families of the Year and recognize the Cascade Two-Cylinder Club with the Pioneer Spirit Award.
