The La Conner Braves softball team showed grit and determination Saturday in a non-league doubleheader against 1A powerhouse Tonasket, despite missing key starter Della Damien, who was sidelined with an ankle injury.

Facing a Tigers squad that traveled 270 miles across the Cascades and came in undefeated, La Conner put the bat on the ball in both games, even as Tonasket’s heavy hitting powered them to 31-5 and 22-3 wins.

Rachel Bill led the Braves in the opener with two solid base hits. Yamileth Ocampo-Contreras belted a double and drove home a run for the Braves while teammate Crystal Ellis added a base rip.

Ocampo-Contreras, Ellis, Kellie Cayou-Lockrem, Penelope Gwin, and Kat Edwards each contributed hits in the second game.
The weekend results dropped La Conner to 0-4, but the team is now preparing for the start of its NW2B/1B schedule.

The Braves are slated for back-to-back league clashes with the Concrete Lions. La Conner hosts the Lions April 1 at 4 p.m. and visits Concrete April 3 in another 4 p.m. start.
