Community members are invited to pick the top two finalists for La Conner’s logo redesign competition, which was launched in 2025. Out of three semi-finalists, voters can only pick the one they believe reflects the Town and its future goals, according to the Town’s website. Voters must live within town limits. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community’s Department of Environmental Protection recently introduced a Tribal Septic Inventory project in collaboration with the John Hopkins College of Indigenous Health, according to a Facebook post. The project will identify households with unknown or uncertain wastewater infrastructure and will help prevent potential future leaks into the Skagit watershed. More details will be announced next year.
On Sept. 18, a coalition of attorneys that includes the state attorney general secured a preliminary injunction blocking the Trump Administration from demanding sensitive personal information of 17 million commercial drivers’ license holders and from terminating over $10 million in federal funding to the American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators. The lawsuits claim that the U.S. Department of Transportation, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration and the Department of Homeland Security “are violating multiple federal privacy laws by secretly setting up their own database with records extorted from AAMVA, with no guardrails on the use or sharing of drivers’ Social Security numbers and other personal information, and no notice to the public,” according to a press release.
The Skagit League of Women Voters is hosting a “Ballot Basics,” a free program in which members of the public can learn about how ballots are prepared, processed and counted in Skagit County, according to a press release. The event will take place between 3 and 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 1, at the la Conner Swinomish Library. Elections Manager Gabrielle Clay will explain the process of running local elections, including the timeline, how ballots are securely handled, and how election results are verified and certified. The program also includes a panel discussion about election observers, with volunteer observer coordinators explaining how people can sign up to witness the process in person. The Rotary Club of La Conner is offering free CPR classes to La Conner and Swinomish community members at the La Conner High School library. Fire District 13 Chief Wood Weiss and District 13 CARES firefighters and EMTs will teach CPR, basic first aid and how to operate automated external defibrillators (AEDs). The first session was completed in August and was open to La Conner School District staff. Future sessions will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. on Oct. 7, from 3 to 5 p.m. on Jan. 27, and from 10 a.m. to noon on March 20.
