A partnership built on purpose and heart
When Staci Baird and I decided to start a newspaper together last January, we knew what we were doing was a little bit crazy. Who launches a print newspaper in 2025? But we also knew it was worth doing because we shared something rare: optimism, a belief in the power of journalism to uphold democracy and connect people, a joy for life and a love of La Conner.
Though Staci recently stepped away from her role as managing editor, her fingerprints and her heart are on every page of La Conner Community News.
From the beginning, we set out to build a newspaper unlike any other we had read or worked for. We wanted to humbly serve — not to preach from a soapbox or an ivory tower. We wanted to empower. We wanted La Conner Community News to be a vessel for connection and exchange as well as information — a place where neighbors could see themselves and one another reflected with care and respect.
We also wanted to lead differently as a woman-founded paper guided by experience, empathy and heart. Together, we built a newsroom that values transparency, inclusion, fairness and community. From day one, it was a space that supported women, with flexible hours, remote work options, mentorship and room for curiosity and creativity to thrive.
She has a joy for life and a love of La Conner.

Staci brought warmth, joy and wonder to everything she touched. She was the spirit behind so many of our front-page headlines and the welcoming presence that extended into classrooms and community spaces. She reminded us that to serve this town is a privilege — a joyful opportunity that few get to experience — and she treasured every minute.
We had big plans together for the paper, and staff and I will carry her priorities forward: an internship program for college students, an apprenticeship for local learners and a journalism club at La Conner High School. These are the seeds she helped plant.
I am endlessly grateful to Staci — for saying yes when I asked her to take this leap, and for every laugh, late-night layout and small celebration we shared. I miss her every day, but her spirit will always be part of this newspaper’s story.
Kari Mar is the editor and publisher of La Conner Community News.
