The La Conner High School class of 2025 enjoyed one final shining moment together at Whittaker Field on June 12.

Thirty-four members of the class, including nine National Honor Society (NHS) graduates, received diplomas during the school’s 131st annual commencement exercises held outdoors in warm, sunny conditions before an estimated attendance of 800 family, friends, faculty, staff, and well-wishers.

The class, which collectively achieved distinction in academics, athletics, music, theater, and culinary arts, was praised by graduation speakers for its embrace of challenges, sense of purpose, and commitment to one another.

“We didn’t just grow up,” said class President Josie Adams, one of four graduates to share speaking duties during the late afternoon ceremonies. “We grew together.”

Adams thanked a bevy of individuals and organizations — teachers, administrators, advisors, coaches, family members, tribal leaders, business owners, and local residents — for helping the class successfully navigate its high school years.

Class Valedictorian Tyler Cicotte and Salutatorian Kendall Lee echoed those sentiments.

“I’m truly thankful to be part of this class,” Cicotte said, who alluded to its strong sense of community and investments in valued friendships.

Lee cited not only the lessons she and her classmates gleaned from textbooks and lectures, but those related to perseverance, critical thinking, independence, safety, and advocacy.

“It’s hard to express in words,” she noted, “how much I love my classmates.”

Class speaker Addison Wigal, the final graduate to speak, jokingly said it was fitting that she would offer closing remarks since she “was always called last for attendance.” Wigal saluted staff members retiring from the La Conner School District this spring and expressed gratitude for the friendships made here, some dating to “when we were 5-year-olds” starting kindergarten.

Class member Eyowyn Sams-Gustafson illustrated this senior group’s wide range of talents with a guitar solo, performing “The Hand that Feeds” by The Crane Wives.

The Swinomish Canoe Family singers and drummers, including several members of the graduating class, also provided inspiring music.

“We’re very honored to share our love, prayers, and stories,” said Swinomish Indian Tribal Community Senator and Cultural Events Director Aurelia Bailey. “We’re here to send prayers and blessings to all members of the class of 2025.”

Superintendent David Cram presented the class on what he termed a “milestone occasion” celebrating the seniors’ hard work, determination, and promise for the future.

Among the honors presented to La Conner’s 2025 graduates were six perpetual display awards:

  • Jonathan Gonzalez received the Vince Sellen Community Service and Varsity in Volunteerism awards.
  • Josie Adams was named the La Conner Kiwanis Club-Chuck Hedlund Community Service Award recipient.
  • Kendall Lee received the Megan Lisser Service to School Award.
  • Penelope Gwin was the winner of the Joanne Self Determination & Loyalty Award.
  • C.J. Edwards was the recipient of the Jack Whittaker Achievement Award.
