The La Conner Planning Commission on May 6 approved a proposed museum sign for downtown, an exterior repaint for the Pie Dive Bar building, and revisions to commercial zoning codes.
Commissioners unanimously endorsed a new illustrated sign proposed by La Conner resident Dorothy Bird, designed by Bob Mortenson, promoting the Skagit County Historical Museum, the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum, and the Museum of Northwest Art. Bird presented the rendering at the commission’ Maple Hall meeting. The sign is being eyed for installment at Log Park on First Street.
The Parks Commission previously reviewed the concept and is taking measurements to see how it might fit with an existing visitor guide sign. Town Planner Michael Davolio praised the proposal as a boost to the Creative District campaign.
Commissioners were told cedar hat pavilions in Swədəbš Park, included in the original draft, will not appear in the final version. Though culturally significant, they are not classified as museums. The Swinomish Indian Tribal Community is creating a separate descriptive sign for the boardwalk near Gilkey Square that highlights the cedar hats.
Mayor Marna Hanneman stressed, referencing Swinomish, “it’s their story to tell.”
In other business, Owen and Luke Solvang, owners of Pie Dive Bar, secured approval to repaint the Lighthouse Inn Building exterior ahead of their June opening. Approved colors include Rockwood Green for the building body, Jazz Age Coral for window trim, and Electric Lime for the door. A separate historic design review for a proposed Pie Dive Bar sign is pending.
The brothers said they may apply for a cabaret license. Pie Dive Bar also operates in Snohomish and Gold Bar.
Commissioners also adopted long-debated code changes to commercial zones in the Town’s south end and Port of Skagit. At the request of resident La Conner Kathy Shiner, Assistant Planner Ajah Eills added language clarifying that short-term rentals in the South-end zone are to be limited to those affiliated with workshops or special events.
