La Conner parks panel hears museum map proposal

La Conner may be small, but its museum scene is mighty—proposed maps could spotlight its cultural gems in local parks.

La Conner Parks Commission members previewed a proposal April 9 to promote the Town’s museums through new illustrated maps and signage in local parks.

Dorothy Bird, who moved to La Conner 20 years ago largely because of the Museum of Northwest Art, presented sample maps to the commission. The maps would highlight the town’s museum offerings and be posted in public spaces.

Bird noted that despite its population of about 1,000, La Conner is home to an impressive number of museums.

“When you add the firefighter’s museum with MONA, the Skagit County Historical Museum, and the Pacific Northwest Quilt and Fiber Arts Museum,” Bird said, “La Conner probably has the highest proportion of museums in the country.

“The museums,” she stressed, “bring so much business to the town.”

Bird added that if Tribal permission were granted, Swədəbš Park in Swinomish Village—where several cultural and historical information panels are stationed beneath its signature cedar hat pavilions—could be added to a museum-themed map.

Commission chair Ollie Iversen and the advisory panel’s town council liaison Mary Wohleb were open to supporting future placement of a museum map and/or sign alongside the town’s visitors guide at locations such as the downtown Log Park.

“We would love to work with you to fit the two maps together,” Iversen told Bird.

The commission, which meets again at 9:30 a.m. May 14, took no formal action on the matter.
