It was a lost week on the diamond for La Conner High teams last week.
The shorthanded Braves baseball team, minus injured starting catcher Angus Poprycz and with star pitcher Nathan Bailey not available for mound duty, dropped a two-game home-and-away series to the Darrington Loggers and lost by double digits at home to the NW2B/1B frontrunning Mount Vernon Christian Hurricanes.
The La Conner softball team was also swept by Darrington, falling 16-1 on the road on April 29 and losing 16-6 at home to the Loggers on May 1.
Jade Souryavong delivered La Conner’s lone base hit at Darrington, where the victors capitalized on five Braves’ fielding miscues.
La Conner (2-10; 2-4 in league) mustered more offense at home against Darrington (10-3) two days later but not enough to offset a potent Logger attack.
Despite three singles from Kaleb Otis, the La Conner baseball team was beaten 7-3 at Darrington in an April 29 matchup. Brent Bobb and Kamien Lopez each added singles for the Braves
La Conner fell 18-7 in its rematch with Darrington at home on May 1. Braves’ starting pitcher C.J. Edwards struck out six Logger batters through five innings but was victimized by three La Conner errors before exiting upon reaching his weekly 110-pitch limit.
Chevy Vincent, who had led Darrington (4-11) with two singles in the Loggers’ home victory, fueled the victors at La Conner with two singles, a double, and three runs driven in.
Bailey had a single, double, and triple for the host Braves. Otis added a single and a double.
Two weeks after having lost a hard-fought 3-0 decision to Mount Vernon Christian, the Braves suffered their toughest loss of the season May 2 in a lopsided 30-4 home defeat to the Hurricanes. Mount Vernon Christian parlayed six walks, three singles, and three hit batsmen into a 12-run first frame that set the tone for the rest of the afternoon.
Bailey managed two singles and a double for the Braves. Otis blasted a triple while Lopez and Jimmy Silker each contributed a single.
Mount Vernon Christian improved to 12-5 overall and 9-1 in NW2B/1B play. La Conner’s record slipped to 5-7, 4-6 in league.
Both La Conner teams were slated to meet the Friday Harbor Wolverines in home-and-away pairings this week. The Braves are at Friday Harbor May 6 and entertain the Wolverines on May 8 with all games starting at 4 p.m.
