The proposed levy would replace the current levy, which expires at the end of its term. In 2021, voters approved that measure with 72.2% in favor and 27.8% opposed. The new levy maintains the same tax rate of $1.11 per $1,000 of assessed property value.

In 2024, more than 90% of school levies in Washington state received voter approval. La Conner School District has proposed a rate that ranks second-lowest among the six school districts in Skagit County.

Enrollment decline and funding impact

The school district reports a decline in student enrollment, which affects state and federal funding. Funding allocations are based on enrollment numbers, and La Conner School District has seen a 23% drop in student population over the past decade.

  • 2014-15: Just over 600 students
  • 2020-21 (pandemic period): 581 students
  • 2023-24: 517 students
  • Projected 2024-25: 460 students

If the levy passes

If approved, the levy would collect funds from 2026 to 2029 to help fill the district’s funding gap left after state and federal allocations.
