Last week, U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen announced that the U.S. Department of Transportation awarded $375,000 to the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community to update its Transportation Safety Action Plan and conduct demonstration activities on tribal roads and state highway access points. In a press release from Larsen’s office, Chairman Steve Edwards said the grant will help the Tribe “plan and test practical improvements that make it safer for our members, elders, children, and neighbors to walk, bike, and drive.” USDOT awarded a total of $7.67 million to the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community, Island County and the City of Bellingham under the Safe Streets for All Grant Program, which invests $5 billion over five years to prevent roadway deaths and serious injuries. The program was established under the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, which passed in 2021.

Next week, Douglas Street will be closed between Third and Fourth streets, where crews will repair a large section of failing asphalt. The road closure is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 12 and end Friday afternoon. Plan to use alternate routes.

Town Hall will be closed Wednesday, November 11th in observance of Veteran’s Day.
