The La Conner High volleyball team went to great lengths Monday night to extend its season.
The Braves bused to Bellevue where they defeated Forest Ridge School 3-0 in a loser-out match to earn a district tournament date the next day with top-seeded Mount Vernon Christian (result not available at press time). That match involved much less travel, as it was slated for Mount Vernon Christian’s home court.
The winner of the La Conner-Mount Vernon Christian pairing will clinch a berth to the tourney title round at 4 p.m. Thursday at Landy James Gym. The loser will play an elimination match Thursday immediately afterward on the La Conner court against a yet to be determined foe, at about 5:45 p.m., to remain in contention for a state tournament slot.
Against Forest Ridge, La Conner (11-11) reeled off a straight-sets triumph with a 25-11, 25-13, 25-8 line score.
Nora McCormick paced the victors with 13 kills, three blocks, and two digs. Reese Bird helped the Braves control the match’s tempo by delivering four of La Conner’s 10 service aces. Mia Delage (2), Faith Kowalcyk (2), Lily Stewart (1), and McCormick also served up whiffs for the Braves. Rory Bird finished with six kills and an assist. Kowalcyk led La Conner defensively with 21 of the team’s 23 digs. Reese Bird and Nellie Mueller added one dig apiece.
Also on Monday, the Braves boys soccer team ventured to Tenino in southwest Washington where the La Conner squad fell 5-0 to Columbia Adventist of Battle Ground and were eliminated from postseason action. The soccer Braves finished the campaign with a 7-8-1 mark.
