Brew on the Slough, La Conner’s annual celebration of craft beers from the region, is taking a break this year. Rather than leave fans with empty glasses and in a state of ferment, the Chamber of Commerce is planning to uncork a new wine walk in December.
Director Mark Hulst said the Chamber will look at ways to bring back the October tradition in future years, while the wine walk may be offered separately and on a yearly basis.
Hulst explained the brewers’ distributor went through some staff changes and could not accommodate Brew on the Slough. Additionally, a number of brewers could not participate due to budget constraints.
“We thought we had everything lined up, and then, kind of last minute, the rug was pulled from underneath us. And that’s not anybody’s fault — that’s just how things transpired,” he said. “We’re kinda saddened by that.”
The Chamber was waiting for the state to explain the permitting process and for some wineries to confirm their participation. More details might be released this week.
Hulst said the goal is to have 12 locations that will serve one winery each. Visitors will receive tickets, wrist-bands, a tasting glass and a map that will guide their winery hopping as they check out local shops. The check-in location will also feature a selection of wine bottles that visitors can purchase.
The Wine Walk would take place from 1 to 5 p.m. on Dec. 5. Hulst hopes the event will enhance the town’s festive spirit ahead of Christmas.
“I think it’s going to be fun. It will be good for the downtown community,” he said.
