The American bittern (Botaurus lentiginosus) is a wading bird in the heron family. It feeds mostly on fish, and is well disguised when it wanders local marshlands. It is easy to distinguish from herons due to the vertical brown stripes on its neck. Look for bitterns in marshy areas, often hidden in cattails.
