Respiratory illness indicators are rising across the North Sound region as emergency departments see an increase in respiratory visits.
According to the latest Skagit County Weekly Respiratory Report, the percentage of emergency department visits for Acute Respiratory Illness (ARI) in the North Sound region rose to 14.9%, crossing above the 14% threshold that public health officials monitor as a signal for elevated community respiratory activity and recommended preventive measures such as indoor masking.
The data come as part of regional surveillance that tracks a broad range of respiratory pathogens including influenza, RSV and COVID-19 through both monitoring and hospital testing. Wastewater surveillance from the Mount Vernon Treatment Plant also shows detectable levels of influenza, RSV and COVID-19, providing a complementary early indicator of community transmission trends.
Public health experts note that the respiratory illness season typically runs from October through May, and this uptick marks the first time this season the ARI visit rate has risen above the action threshold in the North Sound region.
Health officials are urging residents to take common-sense precautions as activity climbs including staying home when ill, masking in indoor public spaces and staying up to date on vaccines for influenza and COVID-19 especially for high-risk individuals and those around vulnerable people.
