La Conner High School teams saw mixed results as girls’ soccer split two matches, volleyball won its Sun Dome bracket, football fell at Tulalip, and boys’ soccer dropped its opener last week.

Girls soccer

The La Conner High School girls’ soccer team split a pair of home matches last week at Whittaker Field. The Braves shut out NW2B/1B rival Coupeville 8-0 Friday before falling 5-3 Saturday to 1A Blaine.

Maicy Bowles and Kiana Jenkins each scored multiple goals in the win. Faith Jenkins and Aisley Zimmerman added scores, and goalkeeper Kellie Cayou-Lockrem preserved the shutout with a save in each half.

Against Blaine, Faith Jenkins scored on a first-half penalty kick, but Blaine led 2-1 at the break. La Conner tied it on an own goal before Blaine answered with three straight scores. Kiana Jenkins closed the gap with 14:38 left. Cayou-Lockrem stopped five shots to keep the game close.

“I thought you played amazing,” La Conner head coach Leslie Swanson told her players. “This is a higher-level team (Class 1A) and you hung right with them.”

The Braves, 2-1, visit Lopez Island Sept. 18 and host Forks Sept. 20.

Volleyball

The La Conner High volleyball team, after dropping twin 3-1 non-conference road decisions to Anacortes and Blaine, captured top honors in its bracket at the Sun Dome Volleyball Festival in Yakima last weekend.

Several Braves players filled the stat sheet against Cle Elum-Roslyn, Northwest Christian, Zillah, Inchelium, Napavine, and Riverview.

Maeve McCormick led with 27 kills, 57 digs and 14 service aces. Nora McCormick had 21 kills, 60 digs, 42 assists, nine aces and three blocks. Reese Bird added 19 assists, 18 digs, nine kills and seven aces. Madi Larson had 17 kills, Julie Nelson 12 aces, and Addie Keller 54 digs and three aces.

“A lot of learning happened,” La Conner head coach Pam Keller said of the Yakima tourney experience. “We went in as a No. 4 seed in tournament play which allowed us a lot more playing time and opportunity for the girls to find a rhythm.”

The Braves, after hosting NW2B/1B rival Concrete on Sept. 16, travel Sept. 18 for a non-league match at Evergreen High in Seattle.

Football

The Braves football team, coming off a 16-6 upset win over Entiat in Chelan on Sept. 6, were defeated 56-12 at Tulalip Saturday. La Conner, in its second season playing an independent eight-man schedule, entertains Concrete Sept. 19 in the Braves’ home opener at Whittaker Field. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.

Boys soccer

The La Conner boys’ soccer team opened its season with a 5-0 loss at Auburn Adventist on Sept. 9. With the win, Auburn — which had earlier tied Puget Sound Adventist 1-1 — improved to 1-0-1 on the season. La Conner (0-1) was scheduled to debut at home Sept. 17 opposite Crosspoint Christian of Bremerton. The Braves booters host Friday Harbor at 4 p.m. Sept. 19 in their NW2B/1B opener.
