This year’s La Conner Rotary Club dinner and auction will honor a La Conner community superhero.

1–2 minutes

La Conner Rotarians on Saturday will honor a community superhero while continuing its own Herculean efforts to support youth, education, and literacy here and abroad.

The local service club will honor retired La Conner Library Foundation Director Susan Macek with a Paul Harris Fellow Award at its annual Harvesting Hope Dinner and Auction 5:30-9:30 p.m. Aug. 23 at Maple Hall.

Macek is a former La Conner Rotary President and has twice previously received the Paul Harris award, named for the founder of Rotary International and which acknowledges those who demonstrate exceptional commitment to Rotary’s mission of service above self.

“Her work as a community superhero throughout her career, particularly in bringing the library to fruition, is being recognized,” said dinner and auction chair Audrey Gravley.

The event is a major fundraiser for the local nonprofit organization. Gravley said money raised on Saturday will go to support La Conner Rotary’s ongoing service commitments.

“Our focus on education and literacy remains unchanged,” she said. “We continue to support local schools with everything from snacks and clothing closets to 3rd Grade dictionaries and after-school activities.”

“We’re still helping provide a book a month to local children from birth to age five through the Dolly Parton Imagination Library,” Gravley added, “and supporting mobile libraries for rural students in Honduras.”

Auction proceeds also fund scholarships for La Conner High seniors and post-secondary students, Gravley said.

Harp player Andrew Anderson will provide the evening’s entertainment. La Conner Rotary Past President Adam McGarity has been tabbed as Master of Ceremonies.

The La Conner Rotary Club, whose current president is Marty Pease, was chartered in 1945. Club meetings are 5:30 p.m. Mondays at Shawn O’Donnell’s Farmhouse Restaurant.
