The La Conner School District finalized several administrative decisions for the 2025–26 academic year during a brisk June 23 board meeting, approving a two-year contract for Superintendent David Cram and confirming one-year commitments for principals and district administrators.

However, the district still seeks a replacement for longtime Executive Assistant to the Superintendent Cherri Kahns, who announced her retirement earlier this month.

Kahns, widely regarded as indispensable, has filled the role since 2018. She will remain temporarily to assist with the transition once a successor is named. Her departure marks a significant change for the district’s leadership team.

While Superintendent Cram’s contract, valued at $175,000 annually, has been finalized, salary decisions for other administrators are still pending. Board members expressed confidence in Cram, crediting his financial expertise with steering the district away from a budget crisis following the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the meeting, Cram reported that student enrollment for the 2024–25 school year exceeded expectations, coming in at 463 full-time K–12 students — slightly above the budgeted 460. He also shared that the district’s financial reserve has grown to approximately $700,000, indicating stabilization after years of declining enrollment and state-imposed financial constraints.

“I want to wish her a happy retirement and acknowledge her years of service,” Deyo said.

Additionally, longtime teacher and Hall of Fame volleyball coach Suzanne Marble shared a letter during public comments, expressing gratitude for her 30-year career at La Conner. Marble, who led the school’s volleyball teams to seven state championships, noted with pride that all four of the district’s current middle and high school coaches came through the program she built.

“I wish I could be there to give you a big hug,” ” Deyo told Marble.

Before adjourning, the board approved the second year of a previously negotiated two-year salary schedule for district teachers.

“This is contracted,” Deyo explained, “so we’re merely going through the formality of it.”

The board’s next meeting is scheduled for July 28 at 5 p.m.
