Planning Commission quickly turns Page on short meeting

Maxwell Page made local trivia history May 20 — by chairing La Conner’s shortest planning meeting ever.

1–2 minutes

La Conner High sophomore Maxwell Page has earned a place in local trivia history.

Page, who is the non-voting youth advisor on the Town Planning Commission, presided over what is believed to be the commission’s shortest meeting ever on May 20.

The session lasted all of eight minutes.

There were no status updates for the Town public participation program and Comprehensive Plan revisions, the two topics scheduled under Old Business. As to the latter item, Town Assistant Planner Ajah Eills said La Conner’s Comp Plan proposals are still being reviewed at the State level.

The meeting’s one action item — the Commission’s review of municipal code changes as required by the Growth Management Act (GMA) —was promptly and unanimously approved.

Commission Chair John Leaver and commissioners Cynthia Elliott and Sommer Holt cast the ‘aye’ votes. Commission members Carol Hedlin and Bruce Bradburn were absent.

The code edits were the result of State legislative action, and the Town is required to incorporate them to comply with the GMA, Eills and Town Planner Michael Davolio noted in their staff report.

Prior to the GMA’s passage in 1990, it wasn’t unusual for Town Planning Commission meetings to run for two hours or more due to robust debate over local land use proposals.

As Tuesday night’s meeting demonstrated, times have certainly changed.
