“I was really pleased overall with how well we did at Coupeville,” said La Conner head track coach Peter Voorhees. “The weather was better than expected. We had prepared for the worst.”

Faith Jenkins, an eighth grader, swept the 100-and 200-meter girls’ sprints at Coupeville and joined her sister, freshman Kiana Jenkins, and the McCormick sisters to capture the District 4×100 and 4×200 relay crowns.

Faith Jenkins clocked 12.71 in the 100 and won the 200 with a 25.69 finish.

The Jenkins and McCormick sisters combined to run 50.60 in the 4×100 and 1:47.17 in the 4×200.

In addition, Maeve McCormick soared to first place in the District girls’ pole vault contest with a winning leap of 9-0. Nora McCormick won the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16.63.

On the boys’ side of the District trials, Huizenga clinched top honors in the javelin with a toss of 145-06. He also secured spots at State with runner-up finishes in the shot put (38-10) and discus (130-02).

Huizenga was just one inch shy of tying District shot put champ Chase Connell of Orcas Island.

Huizenga will be joined in Yakima by teammates Yandel Rosales-Rojas and Alex Dowry, who placed second in the 100 meters and javelin, respectively.

Izzy Villard, meanwhile, will compete at Yakima in the girls’ discus on the strength of her second place District finish. The La Conner junior clinched a State berth at 82-04 in an event Coupeville’s Katie Marti won with a heave of 89-08.

In addition, Voorhees said Kiana Jenkins earned an at-large bid to State with her time of 1:01.30 in the 400 meters. She placed third at District behind winner Stella Carli of Friday Harbor (58.19) and Ruthie Rozema of Mount Vernon Christian (1:01.00).

On the team leaderboard, La Conner ran a strong second to Mount Vernon Christian in the girls’ District championship race. Mount Vernon Christian amassed 153 points to 89 for La Conner. Coupeville (62.5), Friday Harbor (49.5), and Orcas Island (21) rounded out the field.

The La Conner boys, with 46 points, were fifth in their half of the District meet. Coupeville topped the boys’ scoreboard with 145 points, followed by Mount Vernon Christian (72), Friday Harbor (66), and Orcas Island (58).

The venue for the three-day State meet is Zaepfel Stadium at Yakima’s Eisenhower High School.
