On Earth Day, April 22, at 11 a.m., the Skagit Board of County Commissioners will consider approving a $10 million option agreement to purchase the 584-acre Haller Farm, located near the mouth of the Skagit River’s north fork, just southeast of La Conner.
The proposed acquisition marks a major step in regional salmon recovery efforts. Haller Farm contains much of the highest-priority Chinook habitat restoration site in the Skagit River estuary. The agreement would allow portions of the land to be restored to estuary, boosting critical salmon habitat and offering broader environmental and infrastructure benefits.
The property also includes the Fishtown area, a 107-acre undeveloped upland parcel culturally significant to the Swinomish Indian Tribal Community and other Skagit tribes.
Negotiations for the deal began in October 2024, with input from tribal nations, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and local dike and drainage district representatives.
Not all of the property will be restored to estuary — approximately 180 acres of high-quality farmland will be preserved through a Skagit County Farmland Legacy Easement, safeguarding it for agricultural use by future generations.
