Several La Conner High School girls’ track athletes sprinted into spring break with strong performances at the Trojan Twilight Meet in Meridian on Friday, April 4 — just hours after school let out early ahead of the week long vacation..

Eighth grader Faith Jenkins quickly sprang into action against competitors from larger schools.

Jenkins paced the Braves’ girls, who finished third on the team leaderboard, by sweeping the 100-and 200-meter sprints. She ran the 100 in 12.91 and was timed at 26.3 in the 200.

Jenkins also  joined her sister, freshman Kiana Jenkins, and the McCormick sisters (freshman Nora and junior Maeve) to win the 4×200 meter relay with a 1.51.73 clocking.

Faith Jenkins then teamed with Maeve McCormick, Kiana Jenkins, and senior Lydia Grossglass to place third in the 4×100 at 53.41.

Nora McCormick joined Faith Jenkins as a solo event winner at Meridian. She captured the 100-meter hurdles in 16.74.

In addition, Nora McCormick added a third-place finish in the long jump (15-4.5) and was fifth in the 300-meter hurdles (52.93).

Maeve McCormick was fourth in the pole vault (8-6) and ran seventh in the 300 hurdles (54.20).

Freshman Aisley Zimmerman chipped in a sixth-place effort in the triple jump (29-0) for La Conner, whose 71 points trailed only Meridian (148.5) and Mount Vernon High (93) on the 13-school girls’ team leaderboard.

The La Conner boys, with 43 points, placed eighth in team standings on their side of the meet. But the Braves were just six points removed from a fourth-place finish. Mount Vernon High (132), Meridian (114), and Mount Baker (58) finished 1-2-3 among boys’ teams. Nooksack Valley clinched a tight race for fourth with 48.5 points. Granite Falls (47), Blaine (46), and Mount Vernon Christian (43.5) placed just ahead of the Braves.

Freshman Yandel Rosales-Rojas and junior Flint Huizenga led the La Conner boys with third place finishes.

Rosales-Rojas minted bronze in the triple jump at 36-10 while Huizenga matched that placement in the javelin (142-6.5), edging Braves’ teammate Josh Dowry who was fourth with a toss of 132.5.

Rosales-Rojas combined with Simon Bouwens, Maxwell Page, and Keaton Bailey to clock a 46.5 finish in the sprint relay, good for third place.

Huizenga and Rosales-Rojas added fifth place finishes in the discus and long jump, respectively. Huizenga, a junior, delivered a 126-6 throw. Rosales-Rojas went 18-11.5 in the long jump. The versatile Rosales-Rojas was sixth in the 200-meters at 11.73.

Bouwens, a senior, took fifth in the 300-meter hurdles with a 46.34 finish.

Coach Peter Voorhees’ charges return to NW2B/1B action April 16 at Coupeville. Events start at  3 p.m.
