Throughout history, libraries, like newspapers, have represented access to information. Starting in the ancient world to today, libraries have been repositories that both preserve and provide information. The advent of public libraries in the late 19th century provided a new era of information access for everyone regardless of class or income. Members of the public who previously had little or no access to information now had a vehicle which allowed them such opportunity. Today’s modern libraries have evolved from repositories of books and newspapers to community hubs of not only print materials, but also public computers, technology, and programming.
We have some great programs coming up for all ages. Saturday, March 29, take a trip back to the 1920s and 30s with a Blues concert with Casaundra May and James. Every Friday from 11:00-11:30 is our weekly children’s story time; come hear a great story, do a craft, and have fun. We invite our junior artists ages 10-18 to join us on Wednesdays to create art for the Junior Art Walk: We have a variety of art supplies ready and waiting for you to create amazing works! On Wednesday, April 9, local photographer Andy Porter will be here to teach junior artists how to compose the perfect photograph — no camera needed. Join us the second Friday of each month from 3:00 to 5:00 for Lego Club for kids ages kindergarten and up. Test your skills with a challenge build or get creative with your own build — snacks are provided.
We also have expanded our teens area with great thanks to the Tom & Alexa Robbins Creative Space Fund. Teens, be sure to stop by the library to check out our brand-new teen area with fun furniture and a whole new look! Come read a book, do homework, or gather quietly with friends. Adults will be tempted by this new spot, and are welcome when there are no teens in the library; however, teens get priority from 3 p.m. to close every day.

The La Conner Swinomish Library continues to fulfill our vision to be a place of discovery, connection, and inspiration for everyone in the community. Our library upholds the principles of equal access and freedom to read by providing a growing collection of technology, materials, and programs. Come to the library to check out the newest books or an old favorite, to read the current edition of local and national newspapers, to access information on our public computers, or for free assistance with your tech devices. We welcome everyone!
