C.J. Edwards played most of the basketball season with a broken hand, he also had a tooth knocked out. Despite these injuries, the La Conner High School student not only persevered but excelled, earning the respect of his teammates, coaches, and rival teams.

And, of course, the media.

As a result, the senior point guard, a second unit All-NW2B/1B Boys’ Basketball Team selection, has been chosen as the Skagit Valley Herald Athlete of the Week.

Edwards was recognized on March 13 for his stellar performance in La Conner’s state tournament matchup with Napavine in Longview on Feb. 28.

He closed out his high school hoops career with 12 points, six assists, and six rebounds in La Conner’s 69-51 setback as the team finished with a 14-10 mark in Head Coach Lance Lopez’s
second year at the Braves’ helm.

“It’s well deserved,” said Lopez, the NW2B/1B Coach of the Year. “C.J. is such a hard worker. He played through some injuries this year.”

“It’s been an honor to coach him,” Lopez added. “He’s a great athlete and even better kid.”

Edwards was La Conner High’s starting quarterback during football season and is a returning baseball letterman, playing middle infield and at catcher.
