Sarah Cook has done it again.

The Northwest Athletic Conference named the Swinomish Tribal Community member and La Conner High School alum, now a two-sport standout at Skagit Valley College, its Athlete of the Week for women’s basketball.

Cook was recognized for a stellar three-game stretch from Feb. 10 – 16, during which she averaged 19.3 points, 10.0 rebounds, and 2.7 steals per contest. She helped SVC improve its win-loss mark to 15-9 ahead of the NWAC Tournament, which opens March 5 in Pasco.

“Sarah is leading our team and helping us to be undefeated in the second round of league play,” head coach Deb Castle said in an SVC athletics department release. “She is one of the major reasons we are in the position we are in.”

The sophomore received similar accolades last fall when she played an integral role during the SVC volleyball team’s run to the program’s first NWAC tournament crown. Skagit Valley’s head volleyball coach Joe Amaral praised Cook then as a “game-changer.”

“Any given match,” he said during the team’s title chase, “she can take over on offense or defense and sometimes both.”

This year, Cook has seamlessly transitioned from volleyball to basketball, just as she did as a student-athlete at La Conner High School.

She suited up for the Lady Cardinals’ hoops squad after being named to the NWAC Volleyball All-Star team, having earned the conference North Region Defensive Player of the Week award several times.

Retired Braves’ State Hall of Fame Basketball Coach Scott Novak wasn’t surprised by the success Cook has enjoyed at the collegiate level.

“Sarah had an outstanding high school career at La Conner,” Novak said. “She was as versatile as any player I ever coached.”
