Braves golfers survive tough weather in season debut at Marysville

Golf is challenging enough when the weather is perfect. Add rain and mud to the mix and scores tend to soar.

Fortunately, La Conner golfers rose to the occasion and shook off tough conditions when they opened their season at Marysville last Friday.

Senior Luke Cicotte led the La Conner boys’ team with a low score of 49 over nine holes at Cedarcrest Golf Course while classmate Addison Keller paced the Braves’ girls by carding a 68.

La Conner head golf coach Galen McKnight said merely completing their round was a victory for the Braves.

“Heavy moisture left the course wet and muddy,” McKnight said. “In addition, snow fell earlier in the morning.”

The weather narrowed the field at the Marysville match to just La Conner and host Evangel Classical School as other teams opted out.

McKnight noted that Cicotte and Keller provided valuable leadership beyond their scorecards at Marysville.

“With many beginners on the roster this year, this match served as a valuable learning experience for the team,” McKnight said.

La Conner golfers are scheduled for home matches this week at Swinomish Links. The Braves are set to entertain Mount Vernon Christian on March 17 and Lopez Island on March 19. Both matches start at 3 p.m.
