A small crowd gathered at Cap Sante Marina in Anacortes early Saturday, May 3, to send the One Ocean crew off on a 14-month research expedition around the Americas. Family, friends, supporters waved from the dock as the 48-foot sailboat departed under gray skies and calm waters.

The five-member crew of One Ocean expedition is designed to increase public awareness about oceanic health. Mark Shrader, who has twice circumnavigated the globe, skippers One Ocean. Michael Beemer, a veteran mariner and director of the Skagit Valley College Marine Tech Center, is a crew scientist.

Grace Dalton, a marine biology student at the University of Victoria, is the lead onboard scientist for the maritime trek. Tess Schornack, an environmental science major at Western Washington University, is the project’s outreach coordinator. Grace Dalton’s mom, writer Jennifer Dalton, is onboard as co-captain and project director.

“It’s an incredible opportunity,”Grace Dalton said, “a dream come true.”
