La Conner High School boys’ basketball coach Lance Lopez has added a new role to his resume — head coach of the Skagit Valley College Cardinals softball team.
Lopez confirmed the hire Monday and said he hopes to continue coaching the Braves basketball program, which he has led for the past two seasons.
Savannah Smith will join Lopez as assistant coach. A Sehome High School alum, Smith played for the Cardinals from 2019 to 2021 and has since served as a pitching coach for the team and as an instructor at the D-BAT Skagit Valley batting facility in Mount Vernon.
“Together, they bring over 20 years of combined coaching and paying experience to the Skagit Valley community,” Skagit Valley College officials said of Lopez and Smith in a July 13 press release. “Their commitment to player development, team culture, and academic excellence will be instrumental in shaping the next generation of Cardinal student-athletes.”
